SKETCHBOOK - Lifedrawing

When you’re life drawing, the truth is in plain sight - judgement and skill exposed to view. Unlike other observational drawing, the chemistry between naked model and dressed drawer connects by looking without modesty or prurience. If these are present, the drawing suffers. Feelings about our own bodies are set aside if we are to judge the accuracy of proportion, balance, form and expression. Despite the conscious facility we admire in good drawing, it takes place in a zone where looking, judgement, and control - eye, mind and hand – come together unconsciously, a mental state achieved, needless to say, through practice.
