SKETCHBOOK

I always have a sketchbook with me, and love observing and drawing people. There’s a furtive frisson to spying on people in public, particularly if they’re asleep, often the case with many of my drawings on trains. Obviously not so with life models, who in my experience over the years like taking their clothes off and being stared at. Drawing musicians means capturing their expressive movement – they certainly don’t stay still. But when asked, most people enjoy being drawn; perhaps we all recognise the time-honoured status of portraits as a form of social record.
